Like you, I find this sad, and more than just a bit scary. This is, in my opinion, part and parcel of where this poor world is headed: down that smooth, shiny path to Hell.
By that I mean...well, let me give you an example.
When I was in the 2nd grade (Catholic school) we had daily Religion classes, complete with textbooks, etc. On the inside flyleaf of this particular book was a drawing of a small boy & girl, standing @ a crossroads, where, on one side was a bright sun rising just over the horizon @ the end of a very rocky path. In the other direction, there was a beautiful, well-kept palace, complete with landscaping, etc., at the end of a smooth, well-paved road.
You can guess the destinations, right?
The one, after a life filled with sacrifice & hard work, was every man's & woman's destination: Heaven...and the Light of God!
The other road, after a life filled with selfishness & sloth, was a direct route to "the other Place" and an eternity of lies.
The way I see it is simply put into just a few words here: do for others & you do for Christ. Do for yourself & you follow Ol' Nick ~ the Devil himself.
In my humble opinion, those who put their own selfish desires ahead of what is best for their families & society at large are taking the smooth road...they don't see what their choices have done to the civilization that God SHOULD be looking down upon, happily the Master of it all. They have taken what He has decreed & turned it around to suit themselves...only to find that, yes, they ARE looking for something more, something which, perhaps, they never really would have lost at all, if they had only listened to Him in the first place.
